Here are BCS publicity documents, laboratory publicity brochures and papers that have been presented about the BCS.
BCS binder
The BCS used to supply a nice binder in which to keep the various technical and criteria documents that were produced.
The British Calibration Service
These two papers, written by Edgar Barnett, were published in Electronics & Power magazine in early 1971. They provide very detailed information regarding the establishment of the BCS and the historical context in which the need for an authenticated calibration approval scheme was identified.
The papers can be seen by selecting the links The BCS Part 1.pdf and The BCS Part 2.pdf below.

About the BCS Dec 84.pdf - later version of the above document.
BCS Measurements 1983.pdf - this leaflet provided a summary of the approved laboratories and the types of calibration that were approved.
BCS Publications Aug 83 - the 1983 issue of the BCS publications list.
Measurement Focus 1978 - this is the final issue of the BCS newsletter, as it was subsequently incorporated into NPL News. This issue includes pictures of the BCS HQ staff at the time.
Rosemount Calibration Laboratory brochure
This brochure describes Rosemount's approved facilities for calibration of resistance thermometers over the range -196 °C to +630 °C. It can be viewed or downloaded by selecting the link Rosemount.pdf at the foot of this page.
In The Beginning
This short paper by Fred Samuels was published by the IEE (now IET) in 1996. It provides an insight into many of the factors that were taken into account as the BCS formulated its approach to laboratory approval.
The paper can be viewed or downloaded by selecting the link In The Beginning.pdf at the foot of this page.
Progress of the British Calibration Service
This paper was delivered by Edgar Barnett (Director, BCS) to the National Conference of Standards Laboratories (NCSL) in Boulder, Colorado, during August 1968.
It summarises the progress of the BCS during its first two years and includes extracts from various criteria documents.
The paper can be viewed or downloaded by selecting the link NCSL 1968.pdf at the foot of this page.
UKAS Day November 2005
During November 2005, UKAS (the present successor to the BCS) hosted a conference that dealt with various aspects of accreditation in the electrical fields. Lawrie Cronin presented a paper entitled Some Events in the Foundation of UKAS and Building on these Foundations. The presentation includes interesting graphs showing the growth of accredited laboratories, and the increase in the number of certificates issued, from 1970 onwards.
The presentation can be viewed or downloaded by selecting the link Events.pdf at the foot of this page.
